Synergy 2011, an event conceptualized by the participants of the Self-Expression & Leadership Program of Landmark Education today, got off to an energetic start at the IAT Auditorium, Queens Road, Bangalore.  38 projects of socio-economic dimensions were kick-started, in the presence of Shri S.Harish, Deputy Mayor, BBMP, Shri Basavaraj, prominent educator, senior training leaders of Landmark Education, Shri Mahesh Nambiar & Smt. Vijayalakshmi Raaj and in the presence of more than 200 citizens of Bengaluru.

The projects cut across a cross section of areas of community work – health, education, transport, social empowerment & environment, covering diverse concerns such as auto-sharing, education of orphans, cycling to office, safety of electrical usage, awareness on kitchen herbal plants, bus-route maps at convenient locations, protection of municipal workers from toxic waste, eye donation, food-for-all, employment schemes for the disabled, insuring of the lower strata of the society, education needs of differently enabled children and various such initiatives.

Shri Harish spoke about the new initiatives that the BBMP is planning to take in areas of garbage management, curbing dog menace, using of the network of lakes of Bangalore as was existing and created by Kempe Gowda, etc.

He spoke about the initiatives taken by BBMP to improve the quality of education in municipal schools and marked improvement in the academic performance of the students, to the extent that this year, there was an increased demand for the PU admissions, resulting in not only filling up of all the seats but that they also had to turn away some parents, as against the situation earlier that some seats were remaining unfilled.

The Deputy Mayor spoke strongly about the unhygienic and unscientific way in which garbage is being disposed by households and others and the huge costs involved in transporting and handling of the same.  He informed that with proper segregation, the quantity of waste going into the municipal system could be brought down by as much as 85%, reducing costs and becoming more eco-sensitive.  He urged all citizens to co-operate with BBMP in this.

He spoke about how the introduction of LED street lights saves about 75% of the electricity costs in the ward where he is the corporator and urged the young citizens to come up with projects such as the ones which the Synergy team had come up with, to make social change required to make the city vibrant.

His message was that this is ‘Namma Bengaluru’ and we alone are responsible for improving the quality of life here by being responsible and participating citizens.

Citizens of Bengaluru widely appreciated the various projects and it was encouraging to see some teenagers and children also going through the posters and taking notes.
